Résumé

--Your résumé is an incredibly important document. For many hiring managers and/or recruiters, this is their first impression of you. We all know how important first impressions are, therefore your résumé needs to not only be concise and compelling, but UNIQUE to you. If you visit my Résumé page, I have written an entire page on this very topic.

Whether your résumé needs freshening up or needs to be completely rebuilt, I will work with you one-on-one to ensure that you put your best foot forward to companies and the proper hiring manger.

Cover Letter

--Let's face it, few people enjoy writing cover letters. They're time consuming and very often, you're not even sure if anyone is even reading what you've spent the time to research and put together.

To address the first point, since so few job candidates bother to write either a specific cover letter (or one at all), you have the opportunity to stand out by writing directly to a company letting them know that you're interested in a specific position and why you are worth speaking to in an interview.

The second point is achieved by mailing a cover letter and your résumé directly to a hiring manager in the mail. That's regular USPS mail - NOT email. When you do this you accomplish 2 things:

1. You give yourself a better chance of having the decision maker at least see you and your background; especially since you took the time to learn about the company.

2. You avoid the unknown result of the online recruiting portals that most often lead nowhere.

LinkedIn Profile

--If you are a professional, you need to be on LinkedIn with a completed profile. LinkedIn is a powerful tool for you and companies and recruiters seeking the best candidates. The good news is that setting up a profile the proper way does not take a lot of time. The following 3 items are mandatory with a

LinkedIn profile:

1. Headshot - If you have a professional one, that's great, but it's certainly not necessary. Just make sure that your face is clear and that you are smiling. You want the profile to be inviting. Like it or not, people form opinions almost immediately. It is therefore critical that you convey a positive feeling to visitors to your page with a good headshot.

2. Job Title - Even if you are not working, this section is important. If you are seeking work, feel free to state this right in the description. For example, you could say: "Technology Project Leader in Search of My Next Opportunity." This states what field of work you are in as well as that you're available to interview for an open position.

3. About - Right underneath your photo and title is a section where you can highlight what type of work you enjoy doing, a proud accomplishment or two, and what you are seeking to do next. This allows anyone who is visiting your profile to learn about you very quickly before they even scroll down any further on your profile.

Interview Preparation

--Interviews are a great way for you to try and determine if a company is right for you; just like the company is determining if you are a good fit for them. Yet, this simple idea is lost on many job seekers as they very often feel uneasy during interviews. The key to not only feeling more comfortable during interviews but actually enjoying the process is all in your mindset and preparation. Check out this short article to see what I mean.

Whether you have an upcoming phone, video, or in-person interview, there are steps that you need to take in order to be fully prepared, and therefore, more relaxed and confident. This includes researching the company and making sure that you have thoughtful questions for whomever you will be speaking with, having answers to an array of questions that you may get, and also what NOT to do or say.

In the attachment above are common interview questions that will help you in your preparation.

Presentation Skills / Public Speaking

--There are countless lists out there that show speaking in public as one of the things that people FEAR the most. I used to be one of those people. I understand the enormous of amount of pressure and self-doubt that creeps in whenever you're in front of a group of people.

The good news is that this, like any other skill, is an area that you can get better in with practice and the right mindset. I wrote an article on this topic that lists several easy steps that you can take today to make presenting to a group of people much easier. Click here to read that article.
